Denali in the Fall!!
There can be only a few places on earth with comparable beauty. As a result, I am breaking the two days we spent there into two blog postings.
There will not be an excess of verbiage here, but there will be a lot of pictures that will hopefully communicate to you more than my words might.
So here we go.
The road from Fairbanks to Denali began with wonderful views, mountains in the distance, green forests in the foreground and a thin cloud layer separating the two…
…and as I have said previously, every day brings more new fall color and we are loving every minute of it.
Blue mountains contrast with the gold leaves over and over.
A bit of snow on the tops of the mountains is called, “termination dust,” marking the beginning of the end of summer.
The closer we got to Denali, the brighter and more profuse the colors became.
Finally we arrived at the RV park.
The caravan is greeted by a moose in the park, ready to park them.
It was a bit windy and his antlers were a little floppy, but that didn’t slow him down or make him less appreciated by those in the caravan who had been wondering exactly who or what would greet them.
The colors on the mountains above the RV park were like a paint-by-numbers canvas.
Don and I took an ATV tour in a nearby area that is totally surrounded by Denali National Park, but is not actually part of Park property.
We drove through the middle of all the flaming colors. It was amazing!
Don and I drove a side-by-side ATV as did one other couple. The others drove single ATV’s.
We stopped periodically at certain vista points where we could see a panorama of beauty that went on for miles.
The rainy day made the mountains misty in the background.
The most amazing thing about Denali in the Fall is the red ground cover. Add that to the greens, yellows, gold and the blue and purple of the mountains in the background…this brilliant color was striking and it was everywhere.
The falling rain gave a stained glass look to the trees through the wet windshield.
We drove in a mostly dry creek bed.
There was running water running through the creek bed…
…and we all gleefully splashed right through the middle of it.
There is nothing more dangerous than six old people on ATV’s… But it is great fun!
There were lots of big puddles and we didn’t even try to miss them. Did someone say, “Second childhood”?
Next we will drive into the Denali National Park itself, and believe it or not, it becomes even more beautiful.
