TOK, ALASKA

Well, we survived Chicken, but the “Chicken-type” of road still had to be traveled for a few more miles to as we headed off to Tok.

We were enjoying seeing a bit more color as we traversed the turns and bumps.

In the distance mountains begin to crawl cross the horizon.

In addition to the beauty of the mountain view, is the lumps and bumps in the road caused by frost heaves.

Again, the road is narrow with either non-existent or mushy shoulders that you don't want your wheels to venture on to.

Finally, as the mountains grow on the horizon, the road becomes smoother.

At the Tok RV park, the caravan is greeted by the “Grim Reaper.” (“You may have escaped me in Chicken, but I’m still looking for you…”)

The office at the RV park had not only a carved bear on the roof…

…but upon closer inspection, I see the bear has a pig with him.  I’m sure there is a story behind this but I can’t imagine what the connection might be.
Tok, AK 050 (800x600)
The mountains loomed very close as we looked up the road that ran past the park.

Tok is a small, rather non-descript town that is sort of a stop-over for many travelers as a couple highways meet there from several directions.  There is not much there of note except a couple hotels and a few RV parks.

That evening we had a “Survival Party” in the pavilion behind the office.
Tok, AK 069 (800x600)
That was followed by a wild and crazy pancake toss where people tried to toss pancakes into a bucket with the prize being a free pancake breakfast the next morning.

A pancake toss is much harder than it looks, and provided a lot of fun for everyone.

The next stop is Fairbanks…civilization once again! Yeaaa!
